Our Wood Window
Restoration
Process

Clients rely on us to restore existing wood windows to their original beauty, durability and operability. Quality Restoration Works, LLC. offers a complete range of historic wood window restoration services for commercial clients in New York City, including wood epoxy conservation, window sash reproduction, hardware restoration and glazing, addressing all window opening issues in one comprehensive package, as follows:

  1. All window sash are removed from their frames and taken to our Brooklyn facility for restoration. All window openings are carefully secured and waterproofed until the restored windows are ready for installation.

  2. At our shop, we remove all glazing and putty from the window sash, saving all historic glass for re-use.

  3. We completely strip all sash of paint to the base wood.

  4. We repair the sash as necessary to restore it to "like new" stability and durability. The repair may entail replacing damaged parts ie. stile, rail, muntin, or just epoxy stabilization. All the joints are re-glued and the sash is made structurally and cosmetically sound.

  5. We then re-glaze the window sash, using as much of the original glass as possible.

  6. The window is then re-finished, using one coat of linseed oil/turpentine, one coat of primer paint, and then two top coats. The paint we use is a proven, super premium imported Dutch alkyd.

  7. While the sash are in the shop, the window frames will be restored in place using the same methods used in the sash restoration. All window frames are checked and adjusted to be sure that they are flat, straight and square in order to permit the sash to fit and operate properly. Where necessary, the window sills are replaced.

  8. After sash and frames are restored the sash is re-installed into the restored frames with new sash chain, parting bead, and interior stops.

  9. To improve the weather efficiency of our restored windows beyond that of the originals, we install a weather stripping gasket on the header, meeting rail and bottom rail and interlocking zinc in the jambs.

  10. We restore or replace all window hardware and re-install it so that the original fit and function is fully restored.

In some cases, replacement of sash will be necessary or preferred. If sash are being replaced skip the sash restoration. The frame restoration remains the same. The custom and reproduction wood window that we install is manufactured excusively by H. Hirschmann Ltd.

Our goal is to fully restore the original beauty, durability and operability of the existing wood windows.
